Third molars, also known as wisdom teeth, are the last teeth to develop and break through your gums. Though not all people develop wisdom teeth, the majority of those who do will typically have them erupt between ages 17 - 25.
As wisdom teeth emerge, they can cause a variety of negative impacts on your oral health, including an increased risk of developing infections, cysts, jaw and nerve damage, and even tumors. To avoid developing unnecessary complication, we recommend wisdom teeth removal for patients 14 year of age and older. Even if patients have fully exposed wisdom teeth, we recommend that they be evaluated. Fully exposed wisdom teeth are located at the back of your mouth and are very difficult to keep clean. Although you may not feel any pain, due to their location there is a higher risk of developing periodontal disease.
