In addition to treating the foundation surrounding teeth, periodontists also specialize in cosmetic surgical procedures. In fact, periodontists are often called the "plastic surgeons" of dentistry. Dr. Rasmussen's esthetic outcomes are directly correlated to his unmatched level of skill, precision and focus on detail.

Reasons for Gingival Grafting

Reduced Sensitivity

When the root of a tooth becomes exposed, it can become sensitive to hot, cold and tactile events. Exposed roots are also more prone to forming cavities, as they are "softer" and "weaker" than enamel. A gum grafting procedure can permanently cover the exposed root, reducing discomfort, minimizing the risk of cavity formation and most importantly restoring the health of the gums.

Improved Appearance

Gum recession creates longer teeth, subsequently leading to an "older" appearance. It also results in asymmetry of the gums, one of the main causes of an unesthetic smile. Gum grafting can create proper proportions and symmetry of the teeth and gums providing a beautiful, esthetic smile.

Improved Gum Health

As gum tissue is lost, the supporting bone lying beneath is also lost. In many cases, it is simply poor quality overlying tissue that is leading to damage of the bone. Gum grafting will increase the quality of gum tissue and stop the progression of both gum and bone loss.

Acellular Dermal Matrix

In many cases, Dr. Rasmussen will use human donor tissue (ADM) instead of autogenous tissue from the roof of the mouth for gum grafting. Utilizing Acellular Dermal Matrix minimizes discomfort, bleeding and eliminates morbidity of a donor site, all while achieving the same outcome as autogenous tissue. It also allows a full mouth case to be completed in a single visit.
Dr. Rasmussen is trained in a minimally invasive surgical technique called the tunneling technique in which he will use ADM in combination with platelet rich plasma, harvested from the patient's blood. A typically full mouth case will take under 1.5 hours to complete and the patient can return to a normal lifestyle the very next day.
Dr. Rasmussen performs more surgeries utilizing Acellular Dermal Matrix than any other periodontist on the west coast of Florida.

Subepithelial Connective Tissue Graft

A subepithelial connective tissue graft is harvested from the roof of the mouth. It is utilized to repair and strengthen damaged gum tissue as well as cover any exposed root surfaces. During this procedure, the exposed portion of the root is cleaned and a small "pocket" is prepared between the native gum tissue and root surface. The connective tissue graft is then placed inside the "pocket" and positioned to cover the root with tiny sutures. Most patients report little to no discomfort and have a follow up visit 2 weeks post-surgery.

Esthetic Crown Lengthening

Esthetic crown lengthening is a procedure used to correct a "Gummy Smile". Many individuals have a non-pathologic condition called altered active or passive eruption that results in the appearance of short teeth and a "Gummy Smile". In reality, these individuals have beautiful teeth hidden behind a curtain of excess gum tissue. By removing this excess gum tissue, the proper proportions of the teeth are exposed, perfect gingival symmetry is created and a beautiful, esthetic smile is revealed.
The procedure involves reshaping or re-contouring the gum tissue and bone around the teeth in question to create a new gum-to-tooth relationship. Esthetic crown lengthening can be performed on a single tooth, several teeth or the the entire gum line.
One of the biggest advantages of this procedure is that it can be completed in just one visit. The benefits of an esthetic crown lengthening:

Pinhole Surgical Technique

The Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST™) is an innovative scalpel free, suture-free option for treating receding gums. The Pinhole Surgical Technique is considered a minimally invasive alternative to gum surgery as there are no incisions or stitches made for treatment. In fact, PST can treat multiple areas of recession or even the entire mouth in just a single visit.
Dr. Rasmussen uses a specially designed instrument to make a tiny hole in the gum tissue and then gently loosens and guides the gum over the recession. As there is no cutting or stitching, recovery is fast with minimal pain, swelling and bleeding. Patients are able to see instant cosmetic improvement after treatment.
