Canine Exposure

When teeth do not erupt naturally, a surgical procedure called tooth exposure may be necessary to facilitate the movement of the tooth into the proper position. This procedure is commonly performed in conjunction with the patient's orthodontist. Prior to performing a tooth exposure, Dr. Rasmussen will conduct a thorough clinical and radiographic evaluation. Utilizing CBCT three dimensional imaging, the exact location of the impacted tooth can be determined so that the surgery is performed as efficiently and minimally invasively as possible. After exposure of the tooth, Dr. Rasmussen will usually attach a bracket with chain that will allow the orthodontist to "pull" the tooth into the ideal position.

Frenectomy

A frenum is a fold of tissue that connects the lips, cheek, or tongue to the jawbone. Frenums are commonly located at the midline between the front teeth or in the space connecting the tongue to the lower jawbone. A frenectomy is the removal of one of these folds of tissue.

In some cases, a frenum can be attached too closely to the gingival margin, which can cause gum recession or the formation of diastemas (spaces in between your teeth). A frenectomy involves the removal of the high muscle attachment. Once this etiologic factor is removed, gum recession and diastema formation is far less likely.

Studies have revealed that if the two front teeth are separated without a frenectomy before an orthodontic closure, there is a 70% chance that the space will reopen after the braces are removed. That’s why it’s recommended that the best time to perform this procedure is near the completion of your orthodontic treatment.

Periodontally Accelerated Osteogenic Orthodontics (PAOO)

Periodontally accelerated osteogenic orthodontics (PAOO) is a clinical procedure that combines selective alveolar corticotomy, particulate bone grafting, and the application of orthodontic forces.
